Keeping It "Classy"

Bid Day 2012

With our new pledge class coming in, I thought i would be fun to do a little research on "How to appear like a classy lady." So, that is exactly what I googled! If you think I'm kidding, you can check it out!

In order to represent Pi Phi and be perceived in a desirable light, you must note some things! Keep an open mind while reading. Here is a fore-warning:

  • You might be called a snob. Just ignore them; whoever says that just may be insecure, and envious that they don't have class and values.
  • Changing your behavior may feel unnatural. If it does, remind yourself that you are a work in progress. A classy person is simply one who consistently exhibits classy behavior. Focus on your behavior and attitude rather than your feelings.
  • If you slip up, forgive yourself, apologize to anyone who may have been hurt by your not-so-classy behavior, and continue on your way. That's classy!
  • Don't be sassy. Being disrespectful of others is never classy.
  • Make an honest effort to make a difference in someone's life, regardless of their social status.

This is me. I took this picture to send to my mom to show what I looked like at Monmouth.
WATCH YOUR SELFIES.
No one likes girls who are full of themselves. A few photos are fine, because everyone should feel confident and beautiful, but a lot of self-photos makes you appear conceited.

The classy lady listens more than she speaks. Having a strong vocabulary is important, but do not use a word unless you are certain of its meaning. Use words to express yourself lucidly. Also, do not correct others when they use improper grammar. Differences in background, family life, and education cause people to speak differently, and people often use slang for effect. More than this, it is irritating and degrading to be corrected by a know-it-all.

Remember to always be clean: run a comb through your hair, keep your nails dirt-free and neat, brush your teeth and bathe or shower. When spraying perfume, be sure to use it sparingly. Excessive use of perfume isn't attractive and does not improve your hygiene, despite popular belief. Being clean is important; being grubby isn't classy and isn't pleasing.
Never have greasy hair. It is gross and trashy.

Few battles are truly worth fighting. Stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves (mentally disabled, animals, children, etc.) Be wary of those who appear to enjoy bickering. If someone is rude to you, either ignore him or her completely or, once you have calmed down and are thinking clearly, explain how you perceived their actions and work towards a resolution. You can also treat them politely while still maintaining your personal stance- be polite but make it clear without being intentionally hurtful or nasty that you don't appreciate what they are doing. Never stoop to their level, and do not be hasty to make judgments of other people. Surround yourself with positive, polite people who encourage and live your classy, intelligent lifestyle.

Pi Phi's are smart. Make sure you can prove that to your peers.
Intelligence is key. You don't have to be a book worm to be intelligent and you don't have to show off, but ignorance of current events is not becoming to a classy girl. Brush up on as many subjects as possible, because it will make you seem well-informed.

Most people will agree that using swear words casually exhibits an inconsistent state of character. You will be much more impressive and impacting toward others when you use curse words less often, or remove them from your vocabulary entirely.

This is a great example of looking classy and still being social.
It's fun to attend a party, but leave immature and irresponsible behavior out of the equation. If you're at a party, be sure to socialize, but speak calmly and don't monopolize all the attention. If you drink, keep drinking minimal and in your tolerance level. Drunk ladies are not classy ladies. If you are underage, DO NOT DRINK.

There are certain things a Classy lady should NEVER do. If it's something you wouldn't do in front of your dad, grandmother, or policemen, DON'T DO IT.

Examples of classy photos:
Nothing in this photo is suggestive. It is simply cute and shows that Pi Phi's can be fun in a Classy Way.
All the outfits are conservative and everyone looks clean. This projects Pi Phi's as beautiful women.
In this picture, three girls are at the lake. It is a great example of a lake picture because they covered themselves up as much as they could. No one likes a bunch of bikini pictures- It gives other people access to pictures of your body and it has the potential to make your sisters and friends feel insecure.

2011 & The Pledge Class from Heaven!

Bid Day is by far the most exciting day of College for all Fall "rushees," especially for the Pi Beta Phi pledges. Let's face it-- We all love Pi Phi! That's because we are the PHInest women in the world. With over 60 pledges this year, it's not hard to see why everyone wants to "Come, Go Pi Phi!"

You want to talk about Awesome? Let's talk about PC' 11!
Since the Angels of PC' 11 come around:
Pi Phi was NUMBER ONE in grades on Tech's Greek Circle
Pi Phi placed SECOND in the Josh Abbott Sorority Showdown
and if I list more than two, it turns into boasting (;

"Chance made us sisters, Choice made us friends"

This blog is switching gears. Hopefully, y'all will want to check the blog often because I will be uploading photos from events and activities throughout the year. I want this blog to be a fun page, not just informational! We will have feature articles written by other sisters and recognize Pi Phi's who are involved  in the community and Texas Tech.

"Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues, put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity." - Colossians 3:12-14

Hope y'all like the new blog! Feel free to leave feedback, and if anyone has any ideas for the blog, let me know(: PPL<3

Day of Service 2011

On Monday, February 28th, our chapter participated in Pi Phi's annual Fraternity Day of Service (not to mention the birthday of Dr. Seuss!) Pi Phi chapters across the globe donated books and their time to promote the literacy of today's youth. Our chapter visited Covenant Children's Hospital here in Lubbock, TX. We had a wonderful experience spending time with and reading to these children. Their cheerful spirits despite their illness touched many of our hearts and reminded us how blessed we truly are.

We hope you take the time to read this personal testimony from Sophomore Chlo Inman of Childress, TX:
"As college students, we can get so caught up in our own world that we overlook the greater aspect of life--others.  Being able to go to Covenant and brighten children's day probably had a greater impact on my life than the children's!  All of the sick children were so grateful for the simple fact that some girls came to visit them for a couple of hours, and the joy was all over their faces.  How could children that have endured such hardship and strife be so grateful for something so minor, yet almost all of us take one of the most significant blessings in life for granted--health?  Walking through the beautifully painted halls of the children's floor, it dawned on me how fortunate we all are to have the treasure of health. Holly Harrison and I got the opportunity to visit one room for the day.  Isaiah, an 18 year old boy, was laying in his bed with 3 balloons resting under his hand.  He was unresponsive to everything going on in the room, but his mother talked about him like he was just another 18 year old boy while stroking his hair.  I didn't know what his diagnosis was or how long he had been in this condition, but my heart broke for his, and his family's, sufferings, but I became inspired from the perseverance and love his mother expressed.  I left the room with a huge lump in my throat, opened-eyes, and a grateful heart. This philanthropy event has had the biggest impact on my life, and has produced a desire to contribute to society through the involvement in children's hospitals.  I know it was a blessing for all involved in the Pi Phi Day of Service!"

Welcome!

Hello! Welcome to the blog of the Texas Gamma Chapter of Pi Beta Phi!

Here at Texas Tech University, the ladies of Pi Phi strive to dedicate themselves to the core values that our founders placed upon the fraternity. (For those of you who are wondering, we have 6 core values: Integrity, Honor and Respect, Lifelong Commitment, Personal and Intellectual Growth, Philanthropic Service to Others, and Sincere Friendship). Being in this chapter is a blessing and the relationships we cultivate will not only flourish through the 4 years of college, but for our entire lives!

The purpose of this blog is to give friends, family, and the community and inside look on the events and weekly activities of this chapter. We hope you enjoy the stories, announcements, and pictures that we will feature. Thank you for visiting our page and we hope you return often!

We also invite you to visit our official website, which can be found HERE.
